First thing I noticed when I checked my computer this morning was the news story of a young mother in Oaklahoma who shot and killed a man as he broke into her home. Her infant son was in the other room. She called 911, informed them she was armed with both a loaded pistol and a rifle and what should she do? The 911 responder told her she couldn't make that decision for her. Next thing you heard was a gunshot. One man dead, his companion turned himself in. Mama safe, baby safe. The only thing I found unusual about this story were the reactions of the two newscasters reporting the story - they seemed surprised and acted if this was an event unheard of. Didn't surprise me. Doubt it would have surprised any other woman. Mother's have been protecting their babies, well, since there were mothers and babies. That's what mothers do. I don't mean to diminish, in any capacity, the enormity of what this young lady felt she had to do. But I do have to say, I don't know a single mother in my circle of friends and family who wouldn't have done exactly the same thing, myself included. What I did find heartbreaking was the fact the this woman's husband - a young man himself, had died of cancer on Christmas Day just 11 days earlier. Even in her grief, she had the where-with-all to protect her home and child. She even had the presence of mind to put a bottle in her baby's mouth to quiet him before she stepped into the hallway with loaded guns to face the intruders. I say GOOD ON HER!!! And may God be merciful, generous and gracious in helping her through her grief. May she be surrounded by loved ones and her life eventually be joyous again.
